Workshop on Commemorations
The Parades Commission, in partnership with the Community Relations Council, is currently engaged in a series of workshops with those from across the parading spectrum, in which specific issues are identified and discussed in an open forum. This week in Belfast City Council, the question of Commemorations was on the agenda, as Northern Ireland heads into a decade of centenaries. The meeting was addressed by historian Dr Eamon Phoenix and was attended by local leaders from both sides of the parading debate.
Parades Commission Chairman Peter Osborne welcomed the workshops:
“We view it is as very helpful that people are facilitated in having discussions outside of the 'next parade' environment. By looking ahead to the question of centenaries and other contentious issues we can hopefully begin a long term engagement which is respectful, sincere and which helps foster a mutual understanding.
“We are grateful to our partners in the Community Relations Council for their input into these meetings.”
